Electrical services for Duncraig homes.
What each job involves, what to watch for, and what to include in your enquiry so it can be quoted quickly.
Owner to confirm
These services are proposed from common residential electrical work and have not yet been confirmed by the business. Confirm, edit or remove each one before publishing. A service only gets its own page once it is confirmed and there is enough genuine detail to justify one.
Power points and switches
New, extra or relocated power points, USB outlets, and replacement switches and plates.
As the way rooms are used changes, power points end up in the wrong places. Common jobs include adding double power points where a power board is doing the work, moving outlets for a new kitchen bench or TV wall, fitting combined USB outlets, and replacing cracked, loose or scorched switches and plates.
A scorch mark, a buzzing sound or a plate that feels warm is worth having checked soon. Stop using that outlet in the meantime.
Helpful to include in your enquiry
- Which rooms, and roughly where you want the new points
- Whether the walls are brick, plasterboard or timber stud
- A photo of any damaged outlet or switch
Lighting
LED downlights, new light points, pendants, dimmers, sensor lights and outdoor lighting.
Swapping older halogen downlights for LED fittings, installing new light points, replacing tired fittings, adding dimmers, and lighting outdoor areas such as patios, paths and driveways.
Sensor lights at the front door, side paths and carport make getting home after dark easier, and they only switch on when needed.
Helpful to include in your enquiry
- How many lights, and which rooms or areas
- Whether you've already bought the fittings
- Ceiling access if you know it: roof space, two storeys or raked ceilings
Ceiling fans
New and replacement ceiling fans, with or without lights, plus wall and remote controls.
A ceiling fan is one of the most useful upgrades for a Perth summer. Jobs range from fitting a fan where a light point already exists, to running a new circuit, to replacing an old or noisy fan with a quieter model with a light and remote or wall control.
Helpful to include in your enquiry
- The number of fans and which rooms
- Ceiling height and type
- Whether you have the fans already
Switchboards and safety switches
Switchboard upgrades, RCD safety switch installation and older fuse boards replaced.
Older switchboards with ceramic rewireable fuses give far less protection than a modern board with circuit breakers and residual current devices (RCDs, also called safety switches). An RCD cuts the power in a fraction of a second when it detects current leaking to earth, which is how many electric shocks happen.
Much of Duncraig was built from the 1970s onwards, and some homes still have their original boards. In Western Australia, homes that are sold, rented or hired must have at least two RCDs protecting all power point and lighting circuits. The WA Government's guide to RCD safety switches explains the rules.
Helpful to include in your enquiry
- A photo of your switchboard with the door open
- Whether you're selling, renting out or renovating
- Any circuits that trip or have stopped working
Smoke alarms
Mains-powered smoke alarms installed, replaced and interconnected.
Smoke alarms don't last forever. Before a WA home is sold, rented or hired, its alarms must be compliant, in working order, no more than 10 years old and permanently connected to mains power, with battery-only alarms allowed only in limited situations. The WA Government sets out the smoke alarm laws for homes being sold, rented and hired.
Most alarms have a manufacture or expiry date printed on the back or side. Interconnected alarms are linked, so when one detects smoke they all sound.
Helpful to include in your enquiry
- How many alarms you have now and roughly how old they are
- Whether you're preparing to sell or lease
- Single or double storey
Fault finding and repairs
Tripping safety switches, dead power points, flickering lights and other electrical faults.
Electrical faults are often intermittent, which makes them frustrating. Finding one means testing circuits methodically until the cause turns up, rather than guessing.
If a safety switch keeps tripping, don't hold it on or tape it up. Unplug the appliances on that circuit and try resetting it. If it trips again with everything unplugged, leave it off and call a licensed electrician. If you can smell burning or see scorching at a switchboard or outlet, turn the power off at the main switch if it is safe to do so.
Helpful to include in your enquiry
- What stopped working, and when it started
- Whether a safety switch or circuit breaker has tripped
- Anything that happened just before: a storm, a new appliance or renovation work
